Exemption allowing householders with solar panels to sell back electricity due to end this December

An exemption that allows householders with solar panels to sell excess electricity back to the grid is due to end in December.

At the moment, people with solar panels can earn up to €400 a year from selling power to their energy supplier and pay no tax.

The end of the tax exemption would force thousands of householders to declare the income from the panels, file a tax return and pay tax, something that would make getting solar panels installed less financially attractive.

But the sun could keep shining for micro-generators as officials in the Department of Finance have recommended extending the tax emption.

A decision on the tax relief is due to be announced by Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe in October’s Budget.
