In a pioneering step towards renewable energy adoption, Indian Railways has installed the country’s first removable solar panel system between railway tracks at Bareka (Banaras Rail Engine Factory), Varanasi, the constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The 70-metre pilot project features 28 solar panels generating up to 15 kW, producing 70–80 units of electricity daily. Additionally, Western Railway commissioned India’s first 2×25 kV electric traction system on the Nagda-Khachrod section of Ratlam division on August 12, 2025, marking a major milestone in sustainable railway electrification.
