I Destroyed a Solar Panel to See Why It Stopped Working

In this update, I tear into one of my 260W solar panels that stopped producing power to finally see what’s going on inside the factory junction box.

I have a stack of these panels — some work, some don’t — and every failed panel has the same junction box design. After testing, I confirmed the panels are actually producing power internally, but nothing is making it past the junction box to the output leads.

Following viewer suggestions from my previous video, I sacrificed one panel to investigate further. I removed the factory junction box, softened the silicone with heat, and even cut the box open to inspect the internals.

Unfortunately (and somewhat disappointingly), the junction box is fully molded and potted in silicone, making it completely non-serviceable. The circuit board and diodes are totally encased, leaving no realistic way to repair them.

While this video ends in a dead end, it answered an important question: these factory junction boxes are not worth trying to fix. The next step is sourcing stand-alone solar junction boxes and soldering in replacements — which will be the focus of the next video.

Sometimes progress means ruling things out — and now we know.
