What happens when the power goes out in the middle of winter?
For years, I didn’t want to think about that question. But after living through ice storms, extreme cold, and rising utility bills, I realized something: I never want to be completely dependent on the power grid to keep my family safe and warm.
In this video, I’m upgrading our home solar power system so we can run essential appliances, store more energy, and have true backup power when the grid fails.
We started small — just a basic battery, inverter, and 200 watts of solar panels. Over time, we learned what we actually needed and expanded the system to handle more real-life loads like refrigerators, freezers, tools, and potentially even an air conditioner.
I’ll walk you through:
• Expanding a small solar setup
• Upgrading from AGM to LiFePO4 batteries
• Choosing the right inverter size
• Adding more solar panels safely
• Basic charge controller considerations
• How to build a simple home backup power system
This isn’t about being trendy. It’s about resilience.
It’s about lowering electric bills.
It’s about not being helpless when the power goes out.
If you’ve ever wondered how to set up a small solar power system at home — or how to build backup power for emergencies — this video will give you a real-world look at what it takes.
The 320Ah LiFePO4 battery used in this build was provided by Enjoybot. I’ll share more details in the video about why upgrading to lithium makes such a big difference in long-term storage and performance.
We live on a half-acre homestead in Central Pennsylvania where we’re working toward greater self-sufficiency through gardening, raising chickens, wood heat, and solar power.
