This Black Homeless Man’s “Stupid” Solar Panels Were a Joke — Then He Never Paid for Power Again

Everyone is paying an electricity bill they were never supposed to carry. Every single month, money walks out of your pocket and into the hands of a utility company that didn’t build the grid for you, didn’t design the rates for you, and certainly doesn’t lose sleep over you. But there was a man — sleeping under a highway overpass in the summer heat of 2019, with nothing to his name except a busted shopping cart, a library card, and three secondhand solar panels that people walking past on the street openly laughed at — who found a way out of that trap. Not with money. Not with connections. Not with some program that put him on a two-year waiting list. He did it with seventy-three dollars in salvaged parts, two weeks of library internet, and a refusal to believe the joke was on him. It wasn’t. It never was.
