What If We Cover Earth with Solar Panels?
Did you know that if we cover just 0.3% of the Earth’s surface with solar panels, we could meet the entire world’s electricity demand?
But the question is, where should they be installed? Some suggest placing them in deserts like the Sahara, which could generate about 2.5 million terawatt-hours of electricity annually, enough to power 96 Earths.

However, such an installation could have severe consequences. It would disrupt the climate cycle and cool the Sahara. Increased rainfall in the desert could trigger massive ocean cyclones, and the Amazon rainforest could turn into a desert.

It has been observed that rainfall in the Sahara causes drought in the Amazon region, while a lack of rainfall in the Sahara accelerates the Amazon’s growth. It may seem that these two regions are far apart, but NASA’s Calypso satellite has uncovered a surprising connection. Each year, around 182 million tons of sand dust fly from the Sahara and travel about 4,300 kilometers across the Atlantic Ocean before falling on the Amazon rainforest.
