Hydropower, solar, and wind driving California’s clean-energy transition | California’s Power Struggle

California is moving closer to its goal of 100% carbon-free energy by 2045 through a mix of solar, wind, hydropower, and innovative projects. The Sacramento Municipal Utility District’s Sierra Nevada reservoirs provide reliable hydropower, while statewide solar expansion has made it California’s largest energy source. Massive new projects like the Darden and Cornucopia solar farms, along with canal-top solar in Turlock, aim to balance supply and demand. Despite challenges, 67% of California’s electricity came from renewables in 2023, setting another record in the state’s clean-energy transition.
