Solar panel watt ratings look great on paper — but they don’t tell you how much usable energy you actually get in the real world.
In this video, I test five portable solar panels and compare them against rigid rooftop solar, using a set-it-and-forget-it method that reflects how solar is actually used while camping and RVing.
Instead of chasing peak numbers, I measure real energy delivered over time and rank panels based on:
Total energy produced (watt-hours)
How closely real output matches advertised specs
Cost per delivered watt-hour
This approach reveals why two panels with similar watt ratings can perform very differently once the sun, angle, clouds, and time of day are factored in.
You’ll also see why rigid rooftop solar provides consistent, hands-off baseline power, and why the Callsun 215W panel stood out as the top-performing flat-mounted rigid panel I’ve tested — enough that it’s earned a permanent spot on my B-Class RV.
