Modhera is a village in Gujarat that has become famous because it was developed as India’s first 24-hour solar-powered village. The government installed solar panels on many houses and also built a large solar power plant along with battery storage. This system produces electricity during the day and stores extra power for use at night, so the village can run mostly on solar energy.

Thousands of rooftop solar systems were installed across homes and public buildings. Because of this, most families now receive electricity with very low or almost zero bills. If they produce more electricity than they use, the extra power can be sent to the grid, allowing villagers to earn some income as well.

This model is connected to broader government efforts such as the PM Surya Ghar scheme, which encourages households across India to install rooftop solar panels with financial subsidies. The scheme reduces installation cost and allows people to generate their own electricity and sometimes sell surplus power.

The government is strongly promoting solar energy for several reasons. First, it helps reduce electricity bills for households and makes villages more self-reliant in power supply. Second, solar energy is clean and does not produce pollution, so it helps fight climate change. Third, India has abundant sunlight for most of the year, making solar one of the cheapest and most practical renewable energy sources. Expanding solar also reduces dependence on imported fuels like coal, oil, and gas.

Projects like Modhera show how communities can become “net energy producers,” meaning they generate as much or more power than they consume. Because of the success of this model, similar fully solar villages have also been developed in other parts of Gujarat, where households save money and sometimes earn from excess electricity.

In short, Modhera is an example used by the government to demonstrate how solar energy can provide reliable power, reduce costs, create income opportunities, and move India toward cleaner and more independent energy.
