Researchers at MIT have developed a waterless electrostatic cleaning system that removes dust from solar panels using electric fields. Dust accumulation is a major issue, especially in desert regions where most solar farms are located. In just one month, dust buildup can reduce panel output by up to 30%, causing huge energy losses.
The new system works by moving a charged electrode across the panel surface. This gives dust particles an electrical charge, while the panel holds the opposite charge. The result is electrostatic repulsion, causing dust to detach and lift off the surface without brushes or water.
The entire process can be automated using small motors and guide rails, allowing panels to clean themselves regularly. This reduces maintenance costs, prevents scratches, and eliminates the need for billions of gallons of water used every year.
This breakthrough could make solar energy more efficient, cheaper, and sustainable, especially in water-limited desert environments.
