A tiny chip implanted under the retina, paired with special glasses, helped restore functional central vision in patients with advanced dry age-related macular degeneration.
The idea is almost absurdly elegant: the glasses capture images, project infrared light onto the implant, and each pixel on the chip converts that light into electrical stimulation for the retina. It is not a cure for AMD, but it is a major step in restoring useful vision in people with geographic atrophy.
