Ministers will seek to fend off an amendment that would have guaranteed solar panels used by the Government will not have been made by Uighur people in China amid concerns about slavery.

Many of the solar panels used in Britain, including on government buildings, come from China, whose Xinjiang region produces between 35 per cent and 40 per cent of the world’s polysilicon, the key raw material for the panels.

It comes as a £200 million investment from Great British Energy will put rooftop solar on schools and NHS sites in efforts to save hundreds of millions of pounds on energy bills and free up cash to reinvest in frontline services.
