Them & Us a new film from Daniel Hopkins.
This formed part of exhibition called Battle Lines at Airspace Gallery in Stoke On Trent from 29th May to the 27th June 2015

The film has been developed since the exhibition to be shown at Film Festivals and other spaces.

‘Them & Us’ is about the tension and structure of a forgotten landscape just outside the town of Stafford called Doxey Marshes. This landscape is a showcase for the natural environments constant development and change. The marshland has a major train track across it as well as the M6 Motorway.
The sun comes up and the rain pours down the landscape changes continually while the train track and motorway continue with no change. The film and corresponding sound pieces showcase a battle to be seen and heard from both elements.

With its white sandy beaches and warm temperatures, for many years Anna Maria Island was considered a “hidden gem,” the sleepy island providing a rare slice of “Old Florida. In the past decade, tourism development has been targeted as a key economic goal by island, county and state officials and millions of tax dollars have been invested to draw visitors to the island with national and international advertising and publicity efforts. Ponce de Leon named the island for Maria Anna von der Pfalz-Neuburg, the queen of Charles II of Spain, the sponsor of his expedition.

We start off over the Palm Sola Causeway (also known as Manatee Ave Causeway), flying towards Holmes Beach, one of three municipalities on the Island. The other two are Bradenton Beach on in the south part and Anna Maria on the north part of the Island.

On the north part of the Island is Rod & Reel Pier & Restaurant 875 N. Shore Dr, a popular fishing area. The main north-south road on the island is Gulf Drive, which begins on the south end of the island at the foot of the Longboat Pass Bridge from Longboat Key. Gulf Drive is the only road that runs the entire length of the island. We show a popular wedding venue & restaurant The Sandbar. The southern tip of Anna Maria Island borders Longboat Key, Sarasota. Cortez Bridge (cr684) connects the mainland with Bradenton Beach. Anna Maria Island was only accessible by boat until 1921, when the wooden Cortez Bridge was constructed from the fishing village of Cortez to what is now Bridge Street in Bradenton Beach. The remaining parts of the Cortez Bridge are used as a fishing pier.

We then fly over Holmes Beach and the Manatee Ave Bridge to the Palm Sola Causeway back to downtown Bradenton.

Bradenton was incorporated in 1903, originally known as “Bradentown”, named after Dr Joseph Braden, whose nearby fort-like house was a refuge for early settlers during Seminole Indian attacks. In 1943 the Florida legislature merged the cities of Manatee & Bradentown to form the current Bradenton.

We then fly over two popular waterfront restaurants and marinas on opposite sides of the Manatee River. On the Bradenton side is Pier 22 http://pier22dining.com/ and the Twin Dolphin Marina. The Manatee River is a 36 mile river that forms in northeastern corner of Manatee County and flows into the Gulf of Mexico.

Live The Moment is a project for I researched and developed for school. The task was to research the idea of ‘time’ for one semester. This research of time lead me to the fact that people often live their lives through technology – they are truly not living the moment. Who is really doing the living? Is it the camera they are photographing their cherished moments with, the video camera taping the concert they’re at, or the cellphone communicating with their loved ones?

I then began to research the effects of technology and what it is doing to us. I was exposed to the term of Digital Natives. Digital Natives are the first generation to ever be raised entirely in a digital world. According to an article on (www2.macleans.ca/2008/11/07/dumbed-down/), constant access to technology is rewiring this generation’s brains negatively. It claimed technology is replacing the development of social skills, literacy and the will to read, etc. with the development of tech. related skills such as the ability to sort through lots of information quickly. Knowledge is no longer about how much information one can retain mentally, but rather how efficient they are at finding that information through Google.

This led me to analyze my peers and current social situations (as I am included in the oldest age bracket in the digital natives generation) and how I could help relay some awareness to my generation of how truly bionic we have become…and how unnatural it is. This generation requires constant entertainment to pay attention (as our attention spans are shortening), so my solution would have to be extremely engaging to ensure they would remain interested. How could I poke fun at some of the countless situations where technology has negatively entered our social sphere?

Centennial Documentary

During fall 2009, SBCC film students William Conlin and Simon Freeman, with guidance from Candace Schermerhorn, faculty in the School of Media Arts, Guy Smith, Dean and Karen Sophiea, Director of Marketing and Publications, wrote and produced the first documentary commemorating SBCC’s centennial, “SBCC@100.” The 25-minute documentary was screened on February 6, 2010 and February 8, 2010 as a part of the prestigious Santa Barbara International Film Festival. This film is a comprehensive record of the College’s founding, encompassing 1909 to the present. Source material includes photos and film clips from private collections, public archives and the College’s student newspaper The Channels. These materials come to life to tell the remarkable story of California’s progressive community college development, as well as the growth and growing prestige of Santa Barbara City College over time.

Features include:

• Archival footage of Hiram Johnson, California’s governor in the early 1900s, who advocated the establishment of regional junior colleges in California, and ensured passage of the laws creating community college districts to fund and administer the junior colleges.

• The evolution of SBCC’s location, from 1909, when junior college classes occupied a few classrooms at Santa Barbara High School, to its downtown location, the Riviera location and ultimately, the current, beautiful mesa site since 1959.

• Photos of students, faculty and staff through various eras culled from newspapers, yearbooks and the College’s photo archive.

• Interviews with the leaders of SBCC who have led and shaped the College over the past 30 years–current Superintendent/ President Dr. Andreea Serban and former presidents Dr. Peter MacDougall and John Romo.

• First-person accounts of the College’s development from influential community supporters Leatrice Luria, Harold Thornton, Mike Towbes, Ron Werft, and Dr. Joe Dobbs, President of the SBCC Board of Trustees in 2009-10.

I directed this 2d animated short film that was made with 10 volunteer artists to benefit Habitat for Humanity. The entire piece, from initial concept to final output was made in less than 3 weeks. All work was by donation.

Although this was produced as a gift for Habitat for Humanity Canada, I had complete creative and directorial control over the development, preproduction, production, and post.

The piece premiered theatrically at a benefit event for Habitat for Humanity on October 4th. On October 6th, UN World Habitat Day, the film released on-line, promoted by Habitat for Humanity Canada and Habitat for Humanity International. The film will be rereleased under the Habitat for Humanity International umbrella to all US affiliates and across 68 countries worldwide in January 2015.
