Rachel Andrew – Things We Learned While Supporting Perch

Perch is a PHP and MySQL content management system. Customers install the software on their own local development servers and live hosting, often as the very first time they have installed something like this. When we describe this to other developers the first thing they will say is, “support must be a nightmare!”

In this presentation I will share some of the things we have learned in almost four years of supporting the product. Names have been changed to protect the baffled, however in these tales from the trenches are useful tips for all of us.

If you need support, how can you write a request that will get you help fast? What things might your web host be doing that should cause you to run away fast? What should you know to make using third party code easier?

For those who have a product or service for which they offer support, how can you set up processes that make support easier? How can you reduce support issues by identifying the pain points and designing them out? How can you make the support you offer your best marketing and market research tool?

‘Them & Us’ is about the tension and structure of a of forgotten landscape just outside the town of Stafford called Doxey Marshes. This landscape is a showcase for the natural environments constant development and change. The marshland has a major train track across it as well as the M6 Motorway.
The sun comes up and the rain pours down the landscape changes continually while the train track and motorway continue with no change. The film and corresponding sound pieces showcase a battle to be seen and heard from both elements.

  • Pragmatic Java, part 2

    Pragmatic Java, part 2

Allister Smith talks about: “Pragmatic Java”.

Java has lost popularity recently to simpler web-development environments such as php , python, rails etc.
The main attraction of these environments is that development tends to be simpler and more cost effective. There is less, or sometimes no, emphasis on design patterns, abstraction layers, interfaces, Database Independence, taglibs, EJB’s , entity beans, fixed data retrieval queries etc. etc.

There’s nothing wrong with any of these development features. But the java community has frequently embraced these blindly without question. The simpler web-development environments are not hampered by this extra baggage.

Do we need to change our toolset or just our mindset?

This talk argues that a more pragmatic approach is needed. If a technique helps, use it. If it doesn’t (or the improvements are marginal), don’t. Nice to have is not good enough. Take a hot air balloon approach to your java environment. Can I do without it? If so out of the balloon.

Web based development uses a number of languages: Java , HTML , javascript , SQL , XML (as used by ajax and web-services). Java is just another language it’s not a way of life. The talk provides examples of Pythonesque coding in java. It unashamedly promotes the use of stored procedures and database objects (why put a java abstraction layer over something if your application doesn’t benefit from it).

Java is a strong, mature, rich-featured programming language. Some of the other languages are simply not as fully featured or versatile. But we can still learn from them.

Warning: some ideas expressed here may offend!

The talk is not intended to teach people python or rails, but to make them aware of the different mindset!

So…here it is. Finished it faster than I thought I would.

Back when I heard this song, I liked it. It wasn’t until my friend ChosenExiled asked me to make an AMV of this song using Reborn. At first, I was reluctant to do so, but the more I listened to it, the more I saw how scenes from the future arc could fit perfectly with the song. So I started planning it out based on the manga chapters I had read.

I wanted to show not just the epic battles of the future arc, but the bonding and development they went through as well. This is one of the reasons why this arc is my favorite no matter what people say. It’s that bond and times they shared together to grow stronger that really is the true gem of this arc.

Halfway through the AMV, I still could not come up with a title for this AMV. I was frustrating over it. I kept thinking of anything that had the word “war” in it, but nothing sounded good at all. It wasn’t until the very last Reborn episode airing that finally inspired me to name this AMV “To the Future.” These three words not only sum up the entire future arc, but also sum up beyond what they will face together after the future is over.

I hope you all enjoy. This is probably my best work yet. ^^

    Leading Students to Reason Proportionally

The research for this video comes from the article, “Three Balloons for Two Dollars” by Cynthia W. Langrall and Jane Swafford. The article can be found here: http://tidewaterteam.wm.edu/MPDCDocs/smpdfs/proportionareasoningmtms.pdf. How do the questions suggested in the video lead to the development of proportional reasoning? How is this different from teaching students to simply use a proportion to solve a problem? For the Mr. Tall, Mr. Short task, click here: http://tidewaterteam.wm.edu/MPDCDocs/smpdfs/TallTask.pdf.
