    Lifeforce/ASD – Slitscan remix

This is a ‘remix’ of sorts of the awesomely good Lifeforce demo by Andromeda Software Development (you can find it here: http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=31571 )

I made a basic slitscanner, and changed it a bit to produce video. I store the last 640 frames, and take a 1 pixel slice from each frame. These are then placed along the x axis to produce an image. Each frame, a new frame is added to the queue, shifting the queue back, and the position on x of the slice is also shifted by one pixel. I hope that makes some kind of sense, it doesn’t make much to me 🙂

It’s pretty much inspired by all the other slit scanner stuff out there, but particularly the one that produced this video: http://www.vimeo.com/1398634 The method is the same, but I added movement on x to create more motion.

Sorry about the ‘cutting’ every few seconds – when the slice reaches the far right of the image it cuts back to the left, causing a jump. I’ll change it to sweep back to the left instead some time.

I think there’s a bug somewhere too, as the resolution looks lower than it should. I’ll fix these things then release it as a .qtz file or perhaps a tool.

Oh, and it’s slow. Like 8 seconds per frame slow. .75gb of texture data per frame, plus QC’s iterator = pain!

    CONTENT
Andreas Böhler and Anja Hartig, two fellow students and I, are currently working on ‘A Game of Choices’, an interactive claymation flash-game. We built different clay-sets, that the stop motion animated character will later walk through. In order to achieve a smooth walk-through experience, we photographed the 100 cm wide set in 200 highly precise steps. When it comes to precision photography, one can find dozens of systems available. However, professional systems are expensive and therefore out of reach for this project.

As I had recently begun playing with the open-source hardware-platform Arduino, I decided to take it a step further and build a single axis motion control myself. The basic configuration was quickly developed and assembled, however, it presented some severe issues. For example, the shafts were too weak to handle heavy lenses, as the platform would lean to one side. I had to reinforce the system with a second set of shafts that now allows it to handle up to 3 kg of mounted weight.

Another problem arose while testing the system: The rotation of the threaded spindle was unbalanced. As I didn’t have access to a CNC machine at that time, the multiple minor inaccuracies in various parts added up to an unbalanced rotation so I had to apply a workaround by letting the flange nut translate vertically. It may look odd, but the horizontal precision is not noticeably affected. Programming the Arduino board is easy when you’re familiar with a programming language like C, PHP, Python or similar.

If you don’t have great knowledge about electronics, you might want to look into some basics or you’re most probably going to blow up some chips and LEDs – at least that’s what I did… After all, this project was fun and very interesting as it was my first step into the world of physical computing. The possibilities are exciting and I can’t wait to start my next Arduino project – right now, I’m just spoiled for choice.

TR-6 is the perfect evolution of easy to manage power and acceleration, comfortable handling, and impressive speed. World Championship results in Formula, and Pro Slalom and Speed wins are in the lineage of the TR design catalogue, and the feedback and observations of the competitors who test and perform with them provides the foundation of the development. Musique & Cinéma

Designed for all audiences, moviegoers and music lovers, the exhibition “Musique et cinéma, le mariage du siècle ?” is an opportunity to dive into the making of major films that changed the history of cinema, enhancing the role of music in their development.

For this exhibition, we’ve designed a video installation and three interactive modules offering visitors a sensible and pedagogical approach of music in cinema.

LACRIMOSA – was established in November 1990 as an alternative band featuring rock music with poetrical lyrics, mixed with classical influences. Since over 20 years now the band releases their music through their own record label HALL OF SERMON. LACRIMOSA became a pioneer for several music styles, such as German Alternative and Symphonic-Metal!

    Lacrimosa (band) – Wikipedia
    ———————— ————–
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lacrimosa_%28band%29

Lacrimosa is a gothic duo led by German Tilo Wolff, the main composer, and Finnish Anne Nurmi, currently based in Switzerland, but originally from Germany. Originally counted among the bands of the Neue Deutsche Todeskunst genre, Lacrimosa have developed their style more towards powerful metal, but Gothic elements still remain.

Their current musical style mixes gothic rock and heavy metal along with violin, trumpet and more classical instruments, although their musical development throughout the years has also led to changes in instrumentation. Lacrimosa’s lyrics are written almost exclusively in German, although since the 1995 album Inferno every album has featured one or two songs in English, generally written by Anne Nurmi. Finnish has also appeared in the spoken intro to two songs (“Schakal” on Inferno and “The Turning Point” on Elodia) and on a bonus track in a limited edition release of Fassade called Vankina. Their lyrics are mainly about loneliness, sadness, darkness, despair and love.
