Opaz PlugDK Demo – Live Ruby VST coding!

The Steinberg VST API is supported by virtually all professional audio applications on Windows, Linux and Mac OSX. It is a de facto standard that allows to develop audio effects such as a delay and virtual instruments like pianos or guitars in form of pure software.

Opaz PlugDK is an experiment that allows to develop VST Plug-ins using the Ruby language (via JRuby). It comes with very nice features bringing the “scripting” approach to VST development. The plugin reloads instantly when a file is changed, e.g. code changes are audible immediately. Absolutely no compile-package-test cycles are necessary!

It also comes with an IRB console that allows you to attach to a running Ruby plug-in, e.g. to script the plugin live, while it is running (very much like using Ruby as a macro language for the plug-in). Moreover, it wraps the VST API in a very nice DSL, making the code much cleaner and understandable. For increased performance, it is very easy to mix-and-match Java and Ruby code. It also comes with Rake tasks that bundle your plugin for windows, mac and linux righ-away.

BTW: Sorry for the stuttering audio track. The screen-recording software ate most of the cpu cycles on the machine I was using to record.

  • 2012 MauiSails LEGEND wave sail presentation

2012 MauiSails LEGEND wave sail presentation

    Maximizing your potential

Wave sailing is a race, even more so when there is a competition. You only have so much time to enjoy a good swell and only so much energy. To be most upwind, first in the peak, to have power through the whitewater, and to have speed to jump, you need maximum efficiency, power, and pointing ability. There is no start-finish line, but the needs are the same.

The Legend design has experienced significant evolution for 2012, fueled by a combination of technical knowledge gained during race sail development and a passionate desire to exploit the most critical sections of the wave. The Legend reaps the full benefits of daily development and testing, both in the loft and on the water, in the worlds best wavesailing conditions. A modified, shorter luff and higher cut foot outline combined with softer shaping has resulted in a sail that fits perfectly into any wave and will put you wherever you want to be. Light feel and smooth, balanced power allow the Legend to perfectly transition from driving hard bottom turns to flawlessly releasing during radical cutbacks and maneuvers – said Artur Szpunar, co-sail designer.

The shortened luff length moves the forces down, and allows 10kg less tension on average for the softer luff curves. This translates into easy acceleration even on the most radical short wave boards, and unmatched ability to get upwind quickly. Catch more waves, in less time using less energy. A nearly straight foot makes all the aerial maneuvers and wave riding smooth and easy without interference.

The Legend is a full XPly™ wave sail made with the finest U.S. manufactured laminates, including for this year, a specialized Small Yarn/Light Film material used in the upper portions to keep the light feel and smooth handling necessary of tight turning down-the-line sailing. Adding a third color to Art’s bold graphic designs makes these new MauiSails most recognizable on the water, complimenting the amazing performance.

    Available sail sizes » 2.9, 3.3, 3.5, 3.7, 4.0, 4.2, 4.5, 4.7, 5.0, 5.3, 5.7, 6.1

With your involvement & support, we can preserve the only 20 miles of coast that remains undeveloped in Southern California.

“People exploit what they have merely concluded to be of value, but they defend what they love.” ~ Wendell Berry

THE STORY TO SAVE THE GAVIOTA COAST FOREVER

In just over two generations, 280 of the 300 miles of southern California’s once unspoiled coastline have been lost to development, FOREVER. Only 20 miles of coastline remain undeveloped and unprotected – for every generation that follows us.

Twenty men, for twenty years, for twenty miles… This is the story of the Surfrider Foundation, Santa Barbara Chapter’s epic struggle to preserve the Gaviota Coast – southern California’s last remaining stretch of unspoiled, rural coastline.

For twenty years, twenty men have withstood a slew of deep-pocket developers, major corporations, and elected officials in their effort to protect the Gaviota Coast’s incredible biodiversity and unparalleled scenic beauty.

“The Twenty” is an inspiring story of ordinary people, fueled by their passion and their love, who stand together against improbable odds to defend one of California’s last great places.

  • What is a cancer stem cell? Narrated by Dr. John Dick

What is a cancer stem cell? Narrated by Dr. John Dick

Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are cancer cells that have all the classical properties of normal stem cells. Specifically, they are able to both give rise to more copies of themselves (self renewal) and to give rise to all cell types found in the cancer (differentiation). Of all the cancerous cells in a tumour, CSCs are though to be tumorigenic (tumor-forming), perhaps in contrast to other non-tumorigenic cancer cells.. Because of this, after radio- or chemotherapy, if CSCs are not eliminated they are able to cause relapse and metastasis by giving rise to new tumors. Therefore, development of specific therapies targeted at CSCs holds hope for improvement of survival and quality of life of cancer patients.

    SCRIPT
Cancer is the result of uncontrolled cell growth.

Therefore, most cancer drugs are designed to kill rapidly dividing cells.

While these drugs have saved many lives, the return of disease following chemotherapy remains a common problem in the treatment of cancer.

Scientists now know that not all cancer cells are created equal. Rare cells, known as cancer stem cells, do not divide rapidly and therefore are not effectively killed by chemotherapy. These cells have the ability to renew themselves as well as the ability to produce rapidly dividing cells. Therefore, following a series of seemingly successful cancer treatments, rare cancer stem cells can linger and are sufficient to reinitiate the disease.

By studying cancer stem cells, scientists may be able to design therapies that specifically target them in order to reduce recurrence and improve our ability to treat cancer.
