    No gEEk? No problem! Using ExpressionEngine to impress yourself and your clients

    ExpressionEngine is a robust commercial-grade CMS that runs on the ubiquitous PHP/MySQL server environment, without the hassles of needing to know either. EE is an ideal platform for webbies with all scopes of development knowledge, and for clients eager to manage their own sites.

    Caroline C. Blaker, a local developer specializing in ExpressionEngine, will take you through EE’s HTML/CSS design templating process and show you how to publish content, use useful built-in features, and expand your site’s capabilities using EE’s impressive network of professional-grade add-ons and customizations. She will also detail ExpressionEngine’s easy tagging system which effectively replaces PHP or other programming languages for dynamic functionality directly in your HTML.

    If you understand HTML/CSS, a quick introduction to EE can help you create a fully dynamic site right out–of–the–box.

    Fragments – Fstorm Renderer GPU Test

    This is my first approach to render an animation with Fstorm Renderer (A new GPU based engined for 3ds Max, still in development). It runs very well, easy to setup and fast. This footage took in average just 45 sec. Per frame with a single GTX980.
    Thanks to Dron Kozy for this fabulous engine.

    CRIC Project: Dybbøl, a biography of Denmark’s most significant memorial landscape

    This film examines the transformation of Dybbøl battlefield into one of the most important places of memory for the Danish people; a site which came to represent both catastrophic loss and the rebirth of a nation.
    Professor Inge Adriansen, Curator of the Museum Sønderjylland, and CRIC Director Dr Marie Louise Stig Sørensen of Cambridge University describe the development of the site. The varying political and emotional claims that are made through commemorative practices at Dybbøl are examined.
    Prussia’s  decisive victory at Dybbøl in 1864 initiated the campaign for a greater Germany, while Denmark’s defeat defined the emergence of a new nation. CRIC’s Dybbøl research provides a long term perspective on the way symbolic landscapes in Europe can change in use and meaning. The film also shows how today’s memorial events at Dybbøl are being adapted to promote European reconciliation.

    The Future Sounds Of Folk at the Bimhuis – Machinefabriek + One Man Nation

    “The Future Sounds Of Folk is not ethnomusicology for the faint-hearted; rather it is a journey to experience and rediscover the history and tradition of folk, not as the past, but one with a future, and one that would appear well worth waiting for.” – June Yap, The Wire (#318)

    Imagining the sounds of the post-folk. The Future Sounds Of Folk attempts to use the diverse musical traditions of Indonesia as a starting point for the development of new and emerging amalgams of experimental/contemporary music.

    Window Farms by Britta Riley (interview with Maya Nayak) / Eyebeam Open Studios Fall 2009 / SML

    Maya Nayak talks to See-ming Lee about how Window Farms work during the Eyebeam Open Studios in Fall 2009, a biennial events showcasing artists who explore art using traditional medium as well as technology.

    == Window Farms ==

    Window Farms are vertical, hydroponic, modular, low-energy, high-yield edible window gardens built using low-impact or recycled local materials.

    == The Beach The Pier ==

    Goal 1: to start a Windowfarming craze in New York City and other dense urban areas, helping people grow some of their food year-round in their apartment windows.

    Goal 2: give ordinary folks a means to collaborate on research and development at http://our.windowfarms.org

    == History ==

    In February 2009, through a residency at Eyebeam, Britta Riley and Rebecca Bray began to build and test the first Window Farms prototype. Growing food inside NY apartments is a challenge, but within reach. The foundational knowledge base is emerging through working with agricultural, architectural and other specialists, collecting sensor data, and reinterpreting hydroponics research conducted by NASA scientists and marijuana farmers. We have been researching and developing hydroponic designs that are inexpensive and made from relatively inexpensive materials. The working prototype is a drip system made from recycled water bottles, holding 25 plants. Beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, arugula, basil, lettuce and kale are thriving.

    While completing the first Prototype in mid-April, we invited a dozen “Pioneers” to join us in creating Window Farms. We asked them to approach the project like a night class, devoting one night a week for two months. We showed them our prototype and presented the DIY research and development we did so far and invited them to build on our research to create their own designs. Currently, the Pioneers are designing their systems. Their innovative ideas are adding to the knowledgebase about DIY hydroponics.
