A wholesale market in Mexico City has installed 32,000 China-made photovoltaic panels atop its shops, becoming one of the world’s largest urban solar farms. With an investment of nearly US$20 million, the project boasts an annual power generation capacity of 25 gigawatt-hours. However, a significant supply-demand mismatch has emerged: the market’s peak electricity consumption occurs before dawn—when there is no sunlight—highlighting the core challenge of energy storage.
Mexican energy experts and industry leaders note that energy storage systems are crucial to addressing the intermittency of renewable energy and alleviating grid pressure during peak demand. They emphasize that China, by recognizing the importance of energy storage early and sustaining R&D investment, has achieved a world-leading position in related technologies, injecting strong momentum into the global energy transition.
