Solar panels have always meant rooftops, professional installers, and a significant upfront cost. That’s about to change. The UK government announced in March 2026 that plug-in solar panels (i.e. systems you can buy and self-install, then plug straight into a mains socket) will be available to households “within months.”
They’re already hugely popular in Germany, where over 1.5 million households have them. And they could be a genuine option for the many people who’ve previously been locked out of solar entirely, such as renters, flat-dwellers, anyone without a suitable roof.
In this video, our solar experts Charlie and Josh cover what plug-in solar panels are, how they work, what the new regulations will allow, and whether the savings actually stack up – including how they compare to a traditional rooftop solar and battery system.
