In the village of Guang in south korea, residents share daily communal meals funded by a locally run solar energy cooperative generating over $6,000 per month.
Selected in 2022 for a government renewable energy pilot program, the community invested collectively in solar panels using state-backed financing. Instead of distributing profits individually, earnings are reinvested into shared welfare projects, including sports facilities and a community transport van.
The model is now seen as a key example of grassroots renewable energy success as south korea expands its solar rollout targets to 500 villages by the end of the year and 2,500 by 2030.
At the same time, the country continues to rely on coal power amid energy security concerns, delaying plant closures and fueling debate over the pace of the energy transition.
While the government pledges full decarbonization by 2040, critics warn continued coal use could undermine climate goals.
