HMKV – Proto Anime Cut – Proto Anime Cut – Spaces and Visions in Japanese animation

The exhibition Proto Anime Cut presents original drawings of the most important directors and illustrators of Japanese animated films.

The action-packed hero stories and the visionary science fiction of Japanese Anime are set in impressive worlds that are constructed in painstaking detail. Looking at the creative processes, the filmmakers appear as architectural dreamers who operate with virtuosity at the borders of credibility, fiction and utopia. The exhibition focuses on the development of these arenas of action and narrative scenarios. Numerous background paintings, storyboards, drafts, sources of inspiration and film excerpts provide insight into the working methods of the most successful animation artists of the last two decades. Proto Anime Cut presents them for the first time in Europe.

The exhibition includes work by Hideaki Anno (director, Neon Genesis Evangelion), Haruhiko Higami (photographer), Koji Morimoto (director, Dimension Bomb), Hiromasa Ogura (art director), Mamoru Oshii (director, Patlabor, Ghost in the Shell, Innocence) and Takashi Watabe (layout).

The presented artists have played key roles in the development of Anime. By cooperating closely in different production studios in Tokyo they gave their distinctive signatures to many films and developed the prototypical Anime style.

What are embryonic stem cells? Narrated by Dr. Janet Rossant

Since their first discovery, embryonic stem (ES) cells have been the focus of intense research and public scrutiny. Derived from discarded 5-day old embryos (typically obtained from patients undergoing in vitro fertilization), this type of stem cell possesses the ability to create any tissue in the human body and replicate indefinitely in culture conditions. Because of these properties, ES cells represent a unique research opportunity to understand human development and create new therapies for disease.

    SCRIPT:
Following fertilization, the developing embryo contains a group of cells known as the inner cell mass that will eventually go on to form all tissues of the body.

However, at this early stage of development, these cells have not yet committed to become a specific type of cell and are said to be in an undifferentiated state.

If cells of the inner cell mass are isolated, they can grow indefinitely in a plastic dish and maintain this undifferentiated state. These cells are known as embryonic stem cells or ES cells.

Like cells in the developing embryo, ES cells retain the ability to form any type of cell in the adult body. Thus, ES cells are said to be pluripotent.

By studying the signals required to control how ES cells develop into specific cell types, scientists may be able to develop therapies capable of restoring damaged tissues.

MAKING OF: Floating Points | Silhouettes

An oscillating stream of light attempts to intrude on an arid natural landscape, abstract light and a living environment merge, reacting to the dynamics of the music.

    BACKGROUND
I was initially drawn to the Mentawai Archipelago by the lure of perfect waves peeling against picturesque beaches, rimmed by lush, tropical rainforest – although I was quick to discover that there is so much more to this special place than surfing.

I ended up staying for quite a few years and working on a range of things, from surf-guiding on charter boats and resorts to programme design with Surfaid International, punctuated by periods of vagabonding about the simple villages and hidden reefs.

One of the first places I was lucky enough to stay was deep in the rainforests of Siberut Island, where I was introduced to the local community, as well as some of its animal inhabitants. I’ll never forget as a wide-eyed 22 year-old, watching in fear as one of the village women’s Malarial fever became so intense and convulsive, that the Sikerei (shamans) were called for from the neighbouring village.

Longhaired, loin-clothed silhouettes arrived late into the night, paddling up-river in a dugout canoe under the warm moonlight. Bells jingled and their reassuring mantras bounced off the water. The chanting continued as they made their way to the sick lady’s hut to sing, dance and heal.

I tried over my time in the different villages to learn about the culture, language and environment, and I hope that this video respects all three. My intentions by making it are to give a digital voice to the obvious and resonating protest in Mentawai.

The people of Mentawai, especially those of the traditional persuasion are easily the most welcoming, humbling and richest of communities I have come across in my travels. I believe they (like many indigenous cultures) represent a time and a world that demands respect for the natural environment, community and balanced spirituality. Theirs is a paradigm long forsaken by the modern trappings of big cities and belligerent profit margins.

Information is not always easy to obtain, but to my knowledge many areas within Mentawai have in 2014, managed to deter the palm oil companies, whilst other villages are still in negotiations. Other villages still have relinquished traditional titles of the land, and have consequently been locked into development concessions that render the land in question ‘State owned’.

Eritrea is one of first African countries to reach the Goals of Millennium for the Development. Only this country is almost never mentioned by the western media; and when the media speak about it, it is leading to a qualification of terrible and bloodthirsty dictatorship. But really what about this young republic which has just had twenty years?
Eritreans led a fight(wrestling) of liberation for more than thirty years during which the country got organized with a program of elimination of illiteracy and educational, a health system, a development of the agriculture and the main objective of the food safety …
Today Eritrea keeps the momentum and becomes even exemplary. On the other hand the international pressures become more and more disturbing on this little African country.

  • Martha C. Nussbaum on CREATING CAPABILITIES

Martha C. Nussbaum on CREATING CAPABILITIES

If a country’s Gross Domestic Product increases each year, but so does the percentage of its people deprived of basic education, health care, and other opportunities, is that country really making progress? If we rely on conventional economic indicators, can we ever grasp how the world’s billions of individuals are really managing?

In this video and in her new book, CREATING CAPABILITIES, Martha Nussbaum argues that our dominant theories of development have given us policies that ignore our most basic human needs for dignity and self-respect. As an alternative to metrics like GDP, Nussbaum and the other members of the Human Development and Capability Association suggest that we should be asking what each human is actually capable of being and doing.
