Trump scraps Camp David trip, will convene Cabinet at White House – USA Today

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump scrapped his plan to convene his entire Cabinet at Camp David on Wednesday, May 27, citing poor weather that could complicate his travel to the presidential retreat.

Trump will instead convene his Cabinet at the White House, the president said in a post on Truth Social.

An administration official earlier in the day said Trump planned to hold a rare Cabinet meeting at the Camp David compound in Maryland amid rising tensions with Iran that threaten to derail Trump’s efforts to secure a peace deal.

Yet the trip to Camp David was also contingent on the weather cooperating. Trump typically takes Marine One to travel to Camp David, but the helicopter isn’t used during rain.

“Based on the possible bad weather conditions tomorrow, we will be having our Cabinet Meeting in the White House, and will be postponing the Cabinet trip to Camp David,” Trump said in his social media post.

At the Cabinet meeting, which is still scheduled to take place, the official said Trump and Cabinet members will discuss the economy, efforts to tackle fraud and “foreign policy updates.” The war in Iran is expected to take center stage.

The Revolutionary Guard Corps threatened to retaliate on May 26 after the U.S. Central Command said it conducted defensive strikes on missile launch sites and boats in southern Iran that were attempting to lay mines.

Trump faces increasing pressure to secure a deal that ends the conflict and reopens the Strait of Hormuz after signaling that both sides were close to an agreement.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters hours after the strikes that Trump is “either going to make a good deal or no deal,” and that might take “a few more days” for negotiators to achieve.

Trump has held a dozen meetings his Cabinet so far in his second term, but Wednesday was supposed to be his first at Camp David, a compound built in 1938 that past presidents have turned to engage in diplomacy with foreign leaders. It would have been just Trump’s second trip to Camp David during his second term.

Trump’s Cabinet meetings typically turn into lengthy affairs in which Trump’s top aides take turns showering praise on the president. Tulsi Gabbard, who on May 22 announced her resignation as director of national intelligence, is expected to be at the Camp David meeting. Gabbard’s departure is effective June 30.
